Accountex this year was packed with inspiration, conversations, and practical ideas I’m already bringing into my work.

I went with a clear list of actions in mind: from testing new tools to following up on HMRC contact. I came back with fresh motivation and several useful next steps.

It was brilliant to catch up with fellow bookkeepers from the Bookkeepers Collective. These conversations are always a reminder that we’re not working in isolation. There is huge value in shared experiences and peer learning.

One of my favourite moments was an unexpected one-to-one chat with Natasha Everard after her keynote. We had a great peer-to-peer conversation about tech options, the direction our industry is heading, and how bookkeeping is perceived more broadly. It’s always refreshing to speak with someone who brings both insight and clarity in such a down to earth way.

I made time to speak directly with software providers: raising bugs, asking about roadmaps, and digging into new features. These discussions make a difference and help me stay ahead when recommending tools to clients.

Some highlights:

  • Discovering Hammock, a great tax-compliant tool for landlords

  • Seeing how Jenesys is integrating with FreeAgent

  • Exploring the expense card options from Apron

  • Making space to think through Xero integrations and category tracking for FRS VAT clients

I also had some deep-dive conversations with other local accountants and bookkeepers from Chichester. We compared tech stacks and discussed what actually works for smaller businesses trying to stay compliant, efficient and informed. I love working with others in my industry and I'm happy that it's always about collaboration not competition - we each have our own things to bring to the table and that's where the power is.

"When we connect and collaborate, we don't just grow our businesses — we grow the whole profession."

There’s more to follow up on... training, demos, trials, and refining service offers. Yet Accountex did what I hoped it would. It gave me the space and spark to keep evolving what I offer and how I work.
