Tech with a Conscience: My Journey to Choosing an Eco-Friendly Laptop

Why I chose the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7: A key part of my journey for environmental responsibility

The frenzy of Black Friday can make choosing new tech feel overwhelming. With endless options, eye-catching discounts, and a constant push to upgrade, it’s easy to lose sight of what really matters. For me, finding a laptop wasn’t just about snagging a deal or upgrading to the latest specs - it was about making a responsible choice that aligns with my commitment to sustainability. I genuinely needed a new machine as my 10 year old Lenovo Yoga was not playing ball even after several hardware upgrades that had given me a few extra years. Sorry to everyone who hasn't been able to see me on video calls for the last 6 months!

After careful consideration, I landed on the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 (14") as the perfect balance of performance and environmental impact. I know and trust the brand and design as my previous laptop had done so well.

When choosing a laptop, many factors come into play: performance, design, and price often take centre stage. However, as someone committed to environmental sustainability, I prioritised the environmental impact of my purchase. After careful consideration, I selected the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 (14"). Happily I didn't have to compromise on spec and at £899 it's been an absolute steal on price.

Hey trusty old Yoga - meet little Bro - another Yoga!

Environmental Standards and Certifications

The Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 proudly meets the EPEAT Gold certification, which signifies that it satisfies all required criteria for environmental performance and excels in optional ones, achieving 82% of the latter. This certification guarantees that the laptop adheres to strict environmental standards, ensuring that its production and life cycle impact are minimised.

Required Criteria

The required criteria for EPEAT-certified products focus on key environmental factors, including:

  • Product Carbon Footprint Disclosure and Assurance: Transparent reporting on the laptop's carbon footprint.

  • Conformance with EU ROHS Directive: Restricting hazardous substances in manufacturing.

  • Corporate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory: Monitoring and managing emissions across the company.

  • Mercury-Free Design: Eliminating mercury from light sources.

  • Plastic Compatibility with Recycling: Ensuring all plastic parts >25g can be effectively recycled.

  • Renewable Energy Use: A commitment to renewable energy during manufacturing.

  • Energy Efficiency Standards: Compliance with ENERGY STAR® requirements, ensuring low power consumption.

  • End-of-Life Recycling: Providing services to recycle and dispose of the product responsibly.

These features give me peace of mind that this laptop contributes to reducing environmental harm.

Optional Criteria Excellence

Beyond the basics, the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 goes above and beyond by meeting 40 out of 49 optional EPEAT criteria. Highlights include:

  1. Substance Management: Restrictions on hazardous substances like cadmium and beryllium and the reduction of fluorinated gas emissions in manufacturing.

  2. Materials Selection: High post-consumer recycled content, supporting a circular economy.

  3. Product Longevity: Features like a long-life rechargeable battery and public access to service information promote repairability and extended use.

  4. Energy Efficiency: Exceeding International Power Supply Efficiency Level VI and minimising energy consumption beyond ENERGY STAR standards.

  5. Carbon Footprint Transparency: Public disclosure of greenhouse gas emissions associated with production and transportation.

Practical and Ethical Choice

As someone who values honesty and integrity, I appreciated that Lenovo doesn't just claim to care about the environment; they back it up with clear data and third-party certifications. This transparency ensures I’m not just buying into greenwashing but making a real difference with my purchasing power.

In fact Lenovo go one set further and a point of purchase this Laptop's carbon emissions are completely offset - gold star here for Lenovo. Thanks for taking care of that aspect for me - 500kg completely offset through their scheme.

Moreover, the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 is a perfect match for my personal and professional needs. Its lightweight design, robust processing power (Intel Core Ultra 9), and impressive 1TB SSD make it an ideal companion for work and creative projects. Yes I'll be back on video - oh boy I'd better get a hair cut!

Final Thoughts

Choosing the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 was about more than just getting a new laptop; it was a statement about the kind of consumer I want to be - one who values sustainability and corporate accountability. If you’re looking for a high-performing machine that doesn’t compromise on environmental responsibility, I highly recommend this model.

What's going to happen to my old machine? For now this machine will be stripped down to contain less programmes and be made safe for use by my children. It's still a powerful machine and the touch screen makes it idea for their little fingers. My eldest is already writing stories on it!

If you are looking at new tech you can check the EPEAT registry for so many items - Computers and Displays, Imaging Equipment, Mobile Phones, Photovoltaic Modules and Inverters, Servers, TVs. Please do consider prioritising items that take care of our world.
